This month we had the pleasure of having nurse Lonna Munroe and our patient Sidney Sands as guests on our show. Nurse Lonna is new to the Ash Eye Institute team and also new to the field of Ophthalmology. Firsthand, she was able to witness the before and after of Mr. Sands' vision restoration and described what it was like watching her first cataract surgery.
We are always moved by the personal stories of our patients and Mr. Sands' story was no exception. Mr. Sands received life-changing bilateral cataract surgery after being blinded by cataracts. After months of being led by family members, Mr. Sands decided that he needed to have surgery in order to regain his independence.
Depression began to set in as his condition seemed to worsen, however, he remained steadfast in his faith for total vision restoration. Less than 48 hours after surgery Mr. Sands was able to see and walk on his own without being led.
